Originally from a small town in northeastern Ohio, John was eventually drawn elsewhere in the pursuit of self-actualization. What began as a creative background slowly shifted into the technical; John’s early interest in art led him to learn design, fabrication, and manufacturing techniques while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He applied his creative, mechanical, and critical thinking skills in various industries including fine art, orthotics, furniture and interior design, construction, etc. before arriving in his current position at Electric Bike Report. Bikes have been present to varying degrees throughout John’s life; as a teenager, he spent much of his free time on a Diamondback BMX, and during/following the pandemic, a secondhand Specialized trail bike offered a way to blow off steam. Writing has been similarly ubiquitous; a natural skill with the written word developed through formal education into a source of pride and passion. At Electric Bike Report, John uses his analytical mind, technical writing skills, and dry sense of humor to share the best e-bikes with the world!

Here at Electric Bike Report, we’re lucky to have a community of smart, trustworthy, and experienced readers and viewers. That’s why we listen when you speak up!

For years, the AIMA Santa Monica has been one of the most requested e-bikes our audience has asked us to review. After such a long time, we were excited to finally get the bike in for testing, and at first glance, it was clear why the bike was so popular.

As a cruiser/commuter hybrid, the Santa Monica is well-equipped for both functionality and comfort. It features an accessible step-thru frame, an accommodating saddle, and swept-back handlebars that keep the rider upright. It also includes wide, stable tires, integrated lights and turn signals, a suspension fork, and an MIK-compatible cargo rack.

The bike was also highly impressive in practice; as with every model we’ve reviewed, we conducted extensive performance tests, but even a short test ride was enough to reveal the Santa Monica’s lively, responsive feel. Its powerful motor delivered assistance smoothly and quietly, making short work of hills and adapting its output to match our pedal effort.

Looks are certainly subjective, but we couldn’t help but dig the Santa Monica’s classic yet refined aesthetic. Our test bike’s glossy cornflower blue color reminded us of an automobile’s paint job, while its brown faux leather saddle/grips and tan-wall tires added a retro vibe to the whole package.

Electric tricycles, also known as e-trikes, are three-wheeled mobility devices that offer riders a high degree of stability at low speeds. Their stability makes them ideal for seniors or other adults with special mobility needs who are unable to balance on a bicycle or e-bike.

Electric trikes typically have high payload capacities, giving them a remarkable amount of utility! If they don’t outright include cargo racks or baskets, they can usually be outfitted with a range of compatible accessories to help riders carry a load of groceries or other cargo. E-trikes are also well-suited for carrying heavier riders.

New York City recently implemented mayor Eric Adams’ plan to limit e-bike and e-scooter speeds to 15 mph while allowing analog bikes to travel faster.

Rivian’s e-mobility brand ALSO plans to offer a four-wheeled, pedal-powered vehicle for both commercial and consumer use. Amazon struck a deal to deploy thousands of units in locations across the US and Europe.

Additionally, the bicycle and motorcycle brake component maker Galfer teamed up with Spanish motor manufacturer MAHLE to develop a prototype brake rotor with an integrated speed sensor.

N+ Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1® Team Rallye Edition 750 Review

Just as you might expect based on its name alone, the N+ Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1® Team Rallye Edition 750 is a lot of e-bike.

Not only does it feature a powerful 750W rear-hub motor capable of accelerating up to 28 mph, it has dual batteries with a total of 720 watt-hours (Wh) of capacity. It’s also decked out with a gigantic quad-LED headlight, a smartphone-sized color display, and it pairs with an included Bluetooth-enabled helmet that syncs with its onboard light system.

The bike, which we’ll refer to most often as the “Rallye” due to its lengthy moniker and overlap with N+’s other Mercedes-branded e-bikes, also boasts electronic shifting via the 9-speed Pinion gearbox mounted at the bottom bracket. Paired with a Gates Carbon belt, the drivetrain is remarkably long-lasting, low-maintenance, and extremely user-friendly.

The best part? When enabled, the Pinion can automatically downshift when you come to a stop and/or when coasting, making it easy to start or resume pedaling. The gearbox also allows riders to shift when stationary or pedaling uphill. As such, it blends the ease of an automatic transmission with the control and precision of a manual system.

In short, the Rallye offers a premium user experience that’s impossible to miss even on a short initial test ride. This week’s e-bike news includes some huge stories! We have tons of details on a new e-bike from a prominent EV manufacturer. We also highlight a unique, German-made folding cargo bike, and we dive into an update on a company planning domestic assembly and production of e-bikes.

Rivian’s ALSO brand revealed its new modular e-bike, the TM-B. This high-tech ride, which features a proprietary drive system and other custom components, may reinvent how we perceive e-bikes and their uses.

The Hamburg-based company Fold has a unique take on a front-loading cargo bike. It folds end-over-end to fit in a car or on public transit, and it also comes in analog and electric varieties.

Additionally, we recently covered eBliss Global’s plans to assemble e-bikes domestically. More details have surfaced on the company’s roadmap, which may lead to models that are almost fully made in the USA.

Puckipuppy Boxer ST Review | Playing Fetch All Day Long

The Boxer is a comfortable, long-range, full-suspension fat-tire e-bike that happens to be among the most affordable of its kind we’ve tested.

Full-suspension fat tire e-bikes are enjoyed for their power, stability, comfort, and versatility. They typically boast motors capable of flattening hills, wide and knobby tires that provide a large riding platform and off-road traction, and plenty of ride cushioning to make rocky, rough terrain feel comparatively smooth.

There’s just one problem: many bikes of this style are costly, with prices often extending significantly above the $2,000 mark. In our experience, Puckipuppy is a brand that aims to make such e-bikes more widely accessible by making comfortable and capable, yet affordable, products like the Boxer ST. At the time of writing, it is priced around $1,500.

After an introductory test ride, some of the Boxer’s strengths were apparent. The bike’s full suspension, while entry-level, effectively smoothed bumps and rough pavement. As a Class 2 and 3 e-bike with five assist levels, it could also be fast when we wanted it to be—or more tame when we didn’t.

Regardless of speed, the bike’s cadence sensor ensured a low-effort ride. In contrast with torque-sensing e-bikes that respond to active input, the Boxer ST carries its rider up to one of five preset speed limits with a casual turning of the cranks. This type of pedal assistance is ideal for aging riders, those new to e-bikes, and those seeking a relaxing experience.

With more time on the Boxer, we learned that it could provide excellent range for those who enjoy traveling at slower speeds. Its PAS 1 Range Test result is one of the best we’ve recorded from a bike of this style!

This is a big week in e-bike news, as we interviewed Super73’s Chief Marketing Officer and co-founder about an upcoming e-bike it recently teased on Instagram. We also cover a puzzling request from a bike manufacturer calling for MORE tariffs and a promising update to next year’s Bafang motors.

Super73’s MZFT, which releases in November, marks a new direction for the brand. It’s a relatively tiny e-bike with some punch—but also a big focus on safety and legality.

Guardian, an Indiana-based manufacturer of kids’ bikes, has filed a request with the department of commerce requesting 50% tariffs be applied to some parts of imported bikes and e-bikes.

Bafang’s 2026 lineup of e-bike motors will include integrated security features. As one of the largest motor makers in the world, this has the potential to grant big upgrades to a wide range of e-bikes.

Evelo Compass Review | Pointing the Way to A Refined Ride

Mid-drive motors are often renowned for their natural feel, meaning that the electric bikes and trikes that use them behave the most like their non-electric counterparts.

Unlike most mid-drives with torque sensors, the Evelo Compass pairs its motor with a cadence sensor. For riders who enjoy pedaling actively, this allows it to deliver a natural experience at low assist levels. In its high-power settings, however, the cadence sensor makes riding the Evelo Compass extremely easy and low-effort.

In addition to the analog-like feel of its pedal assist system (PAS), the Compass shows its refinement in both its starting simplicity and its upgrade options. The trike isn’t overcomplicated with features or functions. Instead, it sticks to straightforward operation with a 3-speed drivetrain, a throttle, and five levels of pedal assist.

It also has a clean, classic frame design with clear cruiser influence in its saddle and high-rise handlebars. The base model doesn’t include any form of suspension, but buyers can upgrade to a high-end Cane Creek Thudbuster suspension seatpost and/or an extra-cushy Selle Royal saddle at purchase, though we found the ride comfortable to start.

Battery capacity is another element that can be upgraded! The Compass is one of few electric trikes on the market that can be equipped with dual 504-watt-hour (Wh) batteries. Evelo advertises a range of up to 40 miles with a single battery—up to 80 with the upgrade—and our testing supported this estimate.

In addition to testing the Compass’ range, we evaluated its speed, braking performance, and climbing capabilities. Our full review, which continues below, includes the trike’s test data, comparisons with similar models, and a comprehensive analysis of its ride quality.

Overall, we found the Compass to be a noticeable step above the entry-level e-trikes our team has tested, though we recommended that Evelo make a few changes to better align it with its premium price. Keep reading to find out more!
